Everything you need to know about wrap-around labeling of cylindrical products

by Özden Erdinc

Wrap-around labeling is a proven labeling method that has been in use for many years. It is used to apply labels to cylindrical products and is ideal for products produced to high quality standards, as it ensures a uniform and clean labeling. Wrap-around labeling is a fast and cost-effective method for applying labels to products. It is particularly common in the food and pharmaceutical industries. In this blog article, you will learn everything you need to know about wrap-around labeling, including its advantages and disadvantages.

What is wrap-around labeling?

Wrap-around labeling refers to a process in which a cylindrical product is covered with a label all around. The difficulty of this process is in applying the label to the product so that it does not get wrinkles or creases. Full wrap labeling is a very flexible type of labeling, as the label can usually be made in various sizes and shapes. It is also very fast and efficient, allowing large quantities of products to be labeled in a very short time. Different printing techniques can be used with wrap-around labeling, allowing the label to be customized.

How does wrap-around labeling work?

Generally, there are two types of wrap-around labeling: labeling at standstill and labeling in a continuous flow, which function differently.

Wrap-around labeling at standstill

Semi-automatic or fully automatic labeling machines often use 3-point labeling with a drive and counterpressure unit for wrap-around labeling of cylindrical products at standstill. This process uses three rollers: a drive roller and two counterpressure rollers. The product is placed on a conveyor belt that moves at the same speed as the drive roller. A sensor detects the product and activates the counterpressure rollers when the product is in the correct position. The counterpressure rollers press the product against the drive roller and rotate it at the preset speed about its own axis. The label is applied to the product. The counterpressure rollers then return to their starting position and the labeled product is transported further.

Wrap-around labeling in a continuous flow

To label cylindrical products all around in a continuous flow, semi-automatic or fully automatic labeling machines often use a massage belt in combination with a counterpressure plate. Here as well, the product to be labeled is first placed on a conveyor belt that moves at the same speed as the drive on the counterpressure plate. A sensor detects the product and activates the dispensing unit when the product is in the correct position between the massage belt and the counterpressure plate. The product thus rotates about its own axis, the label is applied, and the labeled product is then transported further.

What are the advantages of wrap-around labeling?

  • Better readability of labels due to larger label surface
  • Complete and uniform labeling of the product
  • High quality of labels
  • No wrinkles or creases in the labels
  • Extremely flexible and can be customized to meet specific needs
  • The wrap-around labeling process can also be used for side labeling

What are the disadvantages of wrap-around labeling?

  • Wrap-around labeling can lead to increased material consumption, particularly when the label is to be applied completely around a cylindrical product
  • The labeling speed is slightly lower compared to other labeling methods

For which products is wrap-around labeling suitable?

Wrap-around labeling with semi-automatic or fully automatic labeling machines is suitable for a wide range of products, particularly those that require extensive labeling with information. These can include food, beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceutical or chemical products, and many other products. Wrap-around labeling is particularly useful when fast and cost-effective labeling is required.

In which industries can wrap-around labeling be used?

Wrap-around labeling can be used in many different industries where cylindrical products need to be labeled. These include the food and beverage industry, the cosmetics industry, the chemical industry, the pharmaceutical industry, the electronics industry, and many more.

Can wrap-around labeling be used with different types of labels?

Yes, wrap-around labeling can be done using different labels. This depends on the requirements of the required product declaration. It is also possible to use different labels depending on the information that needs to be applied. The labels can have different sizes, shapes, designs, and colors depending on the requirements of the manufacturer and the product. Typically, paper and plastic labels are suitable for wrap-around labeling.

Is wrap-around labeling an efficient process?

Yes, wrap-around labeling is an efficient method because it can achieve very high speeds and apply labels very carefully and accurately to products. It is also a very flexible method because it can be used for a wide range of products and applications.

How fast is wrap-around labeling?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the speed of wrap-around labeling depends on many factors. These factors include the size and shape of the products being labeled, the type and format of the labels, the labeling machine being used, and the number of labeling stations. Typically, speeds of 50 products per minute can be expected. However, for a more accurate statement, it is advisable to contact the manufacturer of the desired labeling machine.

Is wrap-around labeling cost-effective?

There is no general answer to this question, since the costs for wrap-around labeling depend heavily on the respective requirements and the scope of the products to be labeled. In general, wrap-around labeling is more cost-effective than traditional labeling because it is usually automated and therefore less labor-intensive.

Is wrap-around labeling a useful process?

Yes, wrap-around labeling is a useful method because it provides a large area for displaying information about the product. This allows customers to get a good overview of the product and decide if it is right for them.
